<hi style=afpcap>The American Expeditionary Force obtained 870 of the obsolete V-strut Nieuport single seat aircraft for ther advanced training role from France. These included the model 17C-1, which had been designed for the 'Chasse' or pursuit role, as well as the model 21 which was a trainer version. Other versions acquired included the model 23, 24, and 27 which were basically the model 17 but with modifications to the fin, revised streamlining or a different powerplant. </hi>
